Fritz Schmid graduated from the Federal Technical College ETH in Zurich with a Bachelor in Physical Education and Sport Sciences. Subsequently, he acquired degrees in English, German and Journalism at the University of Zurich, a Master in Sport Management at the Johan Cruyff Institute Barcelona and a Master in International Project Management at the International Academy of Business and Financial Management Singapore. His work experience includes activities in the fields of teaching, public relations and sports sponsoring as well as five years as a sports journalist.
As a coach he has acquired more than 30 years of experience in football, including time in both amateur and elite youth football as well as at all levels of professional football. In his coaching career he has worked for Grasshopper Club Zurich, Tottenham Hotspur FC, FC Aarau, SC Kriens, FC Zurich, FC Basel and with the Senior National Team of Austria. With Grasshoppers and FC Basel he successfully competed in domestic competitions and in the UEFA Champions League. With the Austrian National Team he participated in the Qualifiers for the World Cup 2014. Since February 2018, he is the Head Coach of the New Zealand National Team, the "All Whites".
Fritz Schmid is a UEFA-Pro-Licence-Coach and holds the highest Italian coaching licence. In the field of coach education he has been working as an instructor for the Swiss Football Association SFV, for UEFA, AFC and FIFA for more than 20 years. As a Coach Educator he was also engaged in various Social Development Programs in Asia and Africa. After working as Technical Director of the Football Association of Malaysia FAM for three years, he accomplished various projects as a Consultant for Strategic Planning with the Asian Football Confederation AFC.
